INTRODUCTION

ANIMAL WELFARE BOARD OF INDIA

The Animal Welfare Board of India is a statutory advisory body on animal welfare laws and promotes animal welfare in the country. Established in 1962 under Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (No. 59 of 1960), the Board was founded under the leadership of Late Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, a well-known humanitarian. The Board ensures that animal welfare laws are diligently followed, provides grants to animal welfare organizations, and advises the Government of India on animal welfare issues. It has been at the forefront of the animal welfare movement in India for over 60 years. The Board consists of 28 members, including 6 Members of Parliament (2 from the Rajya Sabha and 4 from the Lok Sabha), with each member serving a term of 3 years.

Board Members

Board members continuously review animal welfare laws and recommend amendments to the government as needed.

Functions

Functions of the Board include monitoring animal welfare laws, advising on legislative amendments, and ensuring compliance.

Monitoring and Advising on Animal Welfare Legislation

To keep the law in force in India for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals under constant study and to advise the government on the amendments to be undertaken in any such law from time to time.

Advising on Rules to Prevent Animal Suffering

To advise the Central Government on the creation of rules under the Act to prevent unnecessary pain or suffering to animals, particularly during transportation, performance, or confinement.

Improving Animal Welfare Through Infrastructure and Veterinary Support

To take appropriate measures for the improvement of animal welfare by encouraging or providing for the construction of shelters, water troughs, and similar facilities, as well as by offering veterinary assistance to animals.
Adoption

Facilitate animal adoption by promoting humane practices and ensuring proper care for adopted animals.

Medicine

Facilitate animal adoption by ensuring medical care and promoting responsible pet ownership.

Food

Ensure adopted animals receive proper nutrition and balanced diets to maintain their health and well-being.

Care

Provide proper care and support for adopted animals, including regular health check-ups and suitable living conditions.
